Accommodations
An academic accommodation is an alteration of environment, curriculum format, or equipment that allows a student with a disability to gain access to content and/or complete assigned tasks (adapted from University of Washington).
Students who need academic accommodation based upon the impact of a disability should apply for Learning Assistance Program (LAP) and initiate their requests. Students have the right to request accommodations at any point a course; however, they are responsible for submitting accommodation requests in a timely manner. Instructors (faculty) are not responsible for retroactive accommodations requests.
Below are brief descriptions of many academic accommodations. For accommodations not described here, students and faculty are encouraged to discuss their needs with LAP.
- Log into LAP Online using your myHancock Username and Password.
- Scroll down to "Select Accommodations for Your Class".
- Check the boxes next to all classes you will use accommodations in.
- Click "Step 2: Continue to Customize Your Accommodations".
- For each course, check all accommodations you will use.
- Click "Submit Your Accommodation Requests".
Alternative Format (also referred to as Alternative Media) means any alternate approach to presenting print information to a student with a disability. Examples of alternative formats include electronic text (e-text), accessible documents and files (Word/PDF), braille, and large print.
The LAP Alternative Media Specialist assists students with their alternative format requests. Faculty can help in this process by submitting their book requisitions to the AHC bookstore and responding to requests for course materials not included on the bookstore textbook list.
