CARES Act Student Emergency Grant

In April 2020, the US Department of Education (DOE) announced that more than $6 billion would be distributed immediately to colleges and universities across the country to provide direct emergency financial aid grants to college students whose lives and educational pathways have been disrupted by the COVID-19 outbreak. The funding was made possible through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The sole purpose of this federal funding was to provide emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses they’ve incurred related to the disruption of campus operations  due to COVID-19. Such expenses included food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses.

Allan Hancock College was allocated a total of $3,853,902 under the CARES Act. On April 13, 2020, Allan Hancock College signed and returned to the Department of Education the Certification and Agreement for Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding and intends to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under § 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Allan Hancock College was allocated $1,926,951 for emergency financial assistance for eligible post-secondary students. The grants were intended to help students cover costs they had experienced as a result of the school closure due to the pandemic. This funding was allocated through two distribution strategies, including broad distribution and emergency grants.
The District was also allocated $1,926,951 to help address the significant financial costs as a result of the COVID-19 emergency.
