What is an internship?

An internship is professional experience that is related to a student’s major or career goal. Internships can be paid or unpaid.  They can be held during the academic year or over summer.

Why seek for internships?

An internship can give you many great opportunities.  It will allow you to develop new skills. Build professional connections, gain valuable experience and prepare you for the future.

Can I get an internship if I have no experience?

Yes, employers are seeking for individuals that they can mentor and teach. They understand that everyone will be looking for their first internship at some point, they want to see that you are enthusiastic and passionate.  Skills gained through academic experiences, extracurricular activities are highly valued by employers.

When should I begin to apply for internships?

Applying for internships can become a long process.  You want to begin to search for internships a year before you are available to intern. There will be multiple items that you will need to put together such as applications, resumes, cover letter, personal statements or request letters of recommendation.   It is important that you give yourself sufficient time to complete all required documents.

If you are interested in a summer internship, it is likely that you will need to begin the application process in the fall.

Internship Search Strategies

Plan and organize your search. Keep a running list of the internships that you have applied to.  Save all internship materials you have submitted.

• Review internship qualifications
• Be aware of deadlines and submit all required documents by that date
• Be prepared to dedicate time to the process
• Begin early. Give yourself plenty of time to gather and complete all required components of the application
• Type or print in black or blue ink
• Answer all questions in their entirety
• Provide a professional email address. If you do not have one create a new one. It is often helpful to have one email for scholarship applications.
• Provide most current contact information
• Ensure that you proof read all information you are submitting on the application
• Review application and make sure each portion is complete
• Be persistent

• Projects/Research: Include class projects that you have participated in. Make sure to detail lab equipment and tools used. Include information about the tie of project and if you worked in a group, individually or with an instructor.
• Course work: your course work will add to your knowledge in the field. You will put to play various skills.  Make sure to list skills you have developed through your course work Ex: working in labs, research, experiments, etc.
• Activities/ memberships: (clubs, professional affiliations, volunteer work)
• Skills(ex: Laboratory skills, tool skills, equipment skills, programming skills)
• References (optional)

ASSURE Summer Reasearch Program at UC Berkeley

Advancing Space Science through Undergraduate Research Experience (ASSURE) is an NSF-funded REU program run by the Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley, a nationally-renowned lab created to expand scientific knowledge of Earth’s space environment, our Solar System, and the wider cosmos. 

Astrophysics and Planetary Science Research at Cornell University 

Up to ten undergraduate Research Assistantships to join a vibrant research community at Cornell's Department of Astronomy and the Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science.

 Students will work on individual research projects with Cornell faculty and research staff on a wide range of topic in in planetary science, exoplanets, design, building and testing novel cameras and superconducting detectors, spacecraft propulsion, cosmic explosions, fast radio bursts as probes of the intergalactic medium and pulsars to search for gravitational waves.

In addition to conducting individual research projects, students will also participate in a series of group activities including lectures, roundtables and workshops. Depending on whether the program has an in person component and how long it is, students will also participate in one or two field trips.

For each participant, a stipend of $6,000.00 will be provided for the ten week session, plus $1,250.00 for housing and meals as well as up to $800.00 towards the cost of travel to and from Ithaca and $1,000.00 towards the cost of travel for observation or other research-related activities, or a professional meeting. Eligible expenses include travel, meals, lodging, meeting registration and preparation of presentation materials.

UC Berkeley Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science Summer Research Experience
Transfer-to-Excellence Research Experiences for Undergraduates (TTE REU), a competitive merit-based program, seeks to inspire California community college students through research at UC Berkeley so that they will ultimately transfer and complete their Bachelor’s degree in science and engineering. The TTE REU program is a residential program providing nine-weeks of hands-on research experiences in the laboratories of UC Berkeley professors. Biological Illustration Internship
The California Academy of Sciences announces an internship in biological illustration. The internship is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students interested in developing illustration techniques related to biological specimens. The intern will work with one or more Academy scientists to develop illustrations that may be used in scientific publications. The internship is integrated with the activities of the Summer Systematics Institute (SSI), and the successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in all SSI activities with fellow interns, including lectures, seminars, presentations, and social activities.

California Conservation Corps. (Public Works Internship)- California Conservation Corps
Internships are available to select corps members who demonstrate excellent work habits. Interns must be recommended by their supervisor and approved by the sponsoring agency. Computational Sensing + Robotics Program- John Hopkins
The REU program in Computational Sensing and Medical Robotics (CSMR) is an intensive, ten-week program of laboratory research and instruction, beginning end of May 2014. Participants will contribute to specific research projects pursued by faculty and researchers at the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics (LCSR). Each student will be a part of a collegial research team, including a faculty project supervisor and a graduate student mentor, and will work on a challenging research project.

National security protects the country against substantial physical and psychological threats to our government; public safety; environment; or energy, food, and fiscal infrastructures. Terrorism, misinformation, and cyber attacks are common examples which are among the top 26 national security threats America is currently facing. Data-driven security is an emerging interdisciplinary area that focuses on researching and applying data science and artificial intelligence methods to solve national security problems. For instance, it deals with applying social network analysis and game theory for bad actor detection and counter-attack in crime and terrorist networks; using artificial intelligence to reduce the spread of misinformation which is responsible for manipulating opinions and public response; integrating data science and analytics into cybersecurity for meeting the cybersecurity challenges of processing large data sets in order to gain valuable insights and reduce cybersecurity risks.

By combining Computer Science and Mathematics, this proposed REU site in data-driven security will provide a unique research opportunity for undergraduate students, who will learn how to bridge the gap between theory and practice and communicate across disciplines. Successful professionals in data-driven security need to know how a model works to be able to choose the most suitable one to solve a problem.

Community College Internships CCI

Department of Energy (DOE) Scholars Programs-Various Locations across US
The DOE Scholars Program introduces students or recent college graduates to DOE's mission and Operations. Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Sanctuary Internship-National Marine Sanctuary
The sanctuary encourages students to get involved and gain valuable experience through internships. Over the years, many students have completed internship projects for the sanctuary and many have also continued on to work in the field of marine conservation. Students gain an understanding of the level of management and coordination that is required to successfully conduct a large-scale public outreach project and have the opportunity to take part in a variety of other sanctuary projects during whale season.

Heal the Bay Internships- Heal the Bay
Internships provide valuable experience working for an environmental nonprofit. Lasting from weeks to several months, internships require at least 8-10 hours/week. Interns are assigned to projects working with experienced HtB staff. Internships are unpaid.

Hidden Villa (Animal Husbandry, Environmental Education, Agriculture, Public Programs and Development)-Hidden Villa
Hidden Villa is a nonprofit educational organization that uses its organic farm, wilderness, and community to teach and provide opportunities to learn about the environment and social justice. At Hidden Villa internships last for a full year there are varied start dates to each, depending on the seasonality of the farm and departments. HYPER

NSF-DoD REU Site: Advanced Technologies for Hypersonic, Propulsive, Energetic, and Reusable Platforms (HYPER) at the University of Central Florida (UCF).

HYPER addresses challenges in aerospace travel and energy production, advancing the fundamental knowledge needed to overcome technical barriers limiting hypersonic flight. The 10-week program will be held this summer from May 21st – July 29th, 2023. Participants will gain hands-on research training in challenges such as: utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques for high-value components, integrating in-site monitoring of stress-strain evolution, developing novel methods for improved internal cooling and heat transfer effectiveness, and mitigating flutter through advanced rotor dynamic control. Many of these challenges rely on approaches that cut across disciplines and research techniques.

LSAMP Undergraduate Summer Research Program- National Science Foundation
LSAMP is looking for underrepresented STEM students to enhance academic experience and opportunities. CSU LSAMP is a summer research opportunity that provides undergraduate participants with the opportunity to work with distinguished faculty and staff as well as network with others in their field of interested through weekly luncheons.

Each year approximately fifteen students are selected as marine technician interns aboard sea-going research vessels that are part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and the United States Coast Guard and the Ocean Exploration Trust. Most internships last for 2-12 weeks and occur all over the country and all over the world: Florida, California, Hawaii, Alaska, Samoa, Europe, etc. All intern travel to and from the ship is covered by the MATE Center, and the intern lives and eats aboard the vessel for the duration of most internships.

The Research Experience for Undergraduates program runs from June 16th to August 22nd, 2014 at both the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) in Newport and at the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences in Corvallis. Molecular and Quantitative and Computational Biology Summer Undergraduate Research Program- Princeton

NSF Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Integrative Biology- UC Berkley
NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where they work closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

NSF Laser-matter Interactions at the Atomic and Nanoscales- Kansas State
As a student in our program, you will be paired with a faculty research mentor. Furthermore, on average about 2-3 hours per week will be spent in a classroom setting, where faculty members will describe the physics behind your own project and your peers' projects as well. In addition to your research mentor, Dr. Larry Weaver will be available to assist you in learning about your research as you get more involved. You will develop a webpage on your project, and give regular updates on your research to your fellow student researchers. Your project will culminate in an oral or poster presentation summarizing your research project, and in the creation of a webpage summarizing your experiences.

Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management

The FECM is seeking motivated students, postgraduates, and faculty to participate in projects at the forefront of the clean energy transition, helping to address the climate crisis through a 12-month full-time fellowship with FECM.  FECM plays an important role in providing solutions that address the climate crisis. We are working to minimize the climate and environmental impacts of fossil energy and to advance carbon management.  

The Office of Carbon Management research priorities include point source carbon capture, CO₂ removal, CO₂ conversion into products, reliable CO₂ storage; blue hydrogen production; and critical mineral production from industrial and mining waste. Point source carbon capture and reliable storage (CCS), as well as CO₂ removal to address our hardest to decarbonize sectors are essential to get where we need to be – a low-carbon economy at the lowest possible cost. As a global leader in the research and development of CCS, carbon removal, reliable storage, and the conversion of CO₂ into products, FECM is also working on developing and deploying low-carbon supply chains like cement and concrete, steel, paper, fuel, nylon polyester, and other important products.

The Oceanic Society, offers a wide variety of conservation-based research opportunities for students - at both the high school and university level. Each Oceanic Society expedition allows students the opportunity to participate in long-term scientific studies by emphasizing project-based learning and the hands-on development of research knowledge and skills. The internship program offers research opportunities under the supervision and mentorship of pathology faculty in various pathology laboratories located at the UC Davis campus or at the medical center/health sciences campus in Sacramento. Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program- St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
The POE program offers a unique opportunity for students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, or public health to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. The POE program provides a short-term training experience (internship) in either laboratory research or clinical research. A primary goal of the program is to encourage students to pursue a career in cancer research, either as a laboratory-based scientist or a physician scientist. Physics - Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at UCSB

Students will work with faculty and graduate students on a variety of cutting-edge research projects in Physics and Astronomy. The program also aims to provide all-round professional development through weekly activities, and a strong cohort experience through shared housing and social activities.

Physics Department Solar Physics/ Astronomy and Space Physics REU Program- Montana State University
Their program gives participants an opportunity to develop skills for contemporary research under the guidance of internationally known physicists. These REU experiences help students make informed decisions about graduate school and careers in academia or research. Most projects involve analysis of data from space missions such as Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, RHESSI, Hinode, and SDO and ground-based observatories. The Data Analysis projects are suitable for most undergraduates at the sophomore or junior level.

Physics REU - UC Merced 

The Department of Physics at UC Merced will host an NSF REU program for the first time in summer 2023. Projects will span a range of subfields in physics, both experimental and theoretical, including biophysics; condensed matter and solar energy; atomic, molecular, and optical physics and quantum optics; nonlinear dynamics; soft condensed matter; and astrophysics. 

Physics and Astronomy Program- UCLA
UCLA's Physics and Astronomy Department offers a research experience program in Physics and Astronomy where undergraduate students work closely with a faculty mentor and their research group on an individual project. All interested students are invited to apply for this 10-week summer program from June 22 - August 29, 2014. Program participants gain direct experience by working in ongoing experimental or theoretical research programs in plasma and beam physics, solid state physics, biophysics, astrophysics, and high-energy physics. All students attend weekly seminars on current research in physics in addition to machine shop and Physics GRE workshops. The experience culminates with the writing of a report and presentation of findings at a closing Symposium.

Waves in Physics- REU  - Washington State Univ. Our goal is to provide a 10-week research experience to undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds. These students will work on their own research project together with a faculty mentor in physics and astronomy and a team of graduate students and postdocs within a research group. Available projects span four major themes described below connected by the common concept of waves. The REU program synergizes with other interdisciplinary STEM summer research programs across the Washington State University (WSU) campus in Pullman Washington to enable unique social activities and professional development opportunities. The end of the internship culminates in a poster presentation at the WSU Undergraduate Summer Research Symposium in early August.

In addition to a $6000 stipend, student travel and housing are covered as well as a paid 1-day trip to tour the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) to hear from scientists there about their experiences in research and professional career opportunities.

Approximately 80 college undergraduate students attend SMDEP at UTHealth each summer. Life/ Physical Sciences Program-The Rockefeller University
The Rockefeller University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to conduct laboratory research. College sophomores and juniors are eligible to spend 10 weeks during the summer in a Rockefeller University laboratory. The program begins in early June and ends in mid-August. Placement in laboratories is centralized through the Dean's Office. Students are matched with laboratories according to their stated research interests, and work on projects under the direct supervision of faculty, postdoctoral fellows and/or senior graduate students.

Science/ Biology Program- Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Their ten-week Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), which begins on the first Monday in June, is designed for approximately 20 outstanding undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are interested in pursuing a career in bio medically related sciences. Applicants must have research experience. Students in the program have the opportunity to: obtain hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories, interact with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, attend a weekly luncheon/seminar series of presentations by faculty, attend skills development workshops to hone presentation and interview skills, attend and present at works-in-progress sessions with the cohort of SURP students.

Participants will conduct research with their chosen advisor on a project relating to the discipline of the advisor and student. Participants also receive instruction while taking part in a museum-based curriculum that includes tours, lectures, and lab exercises on phylogenetic systematics, molecular techniques, biodiversity, evolutionary biology, global change, and other contemporary issues in the natural sciences. One-day field trips highlighting the local natural history include tidepooling and hiking. SURF Program-Boston University
The SURF Program at Boston University is designed to promote access to graduate education for talented undergraduate students, especially those from minority groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Training in Research Affecting Child Health (TRAC)

TRAC fosters acquisition of lasting child health-related research skills with an emphasis on independence and critical thinking. TRAC supports novel, horizontal near-peer-to-peer coach-mentorship through an immersive eight-week pediatric-specific skills course over the summer combined with the development and implementation of collaborative research projects with guidance from faculty coach-mentors that will continue throughout the following academic year so participants can see their project to completion. Participation will culminate in abstract submissions to the Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting the following spring and submission of a first-authored manuscript.

The TTE Summer Research Program, organized by the Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science, in partnership with the Center of Integrated Nanomechanical Systems and the Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center, provides research experience for undergraduates (REU) who are enrolled in community colleges. Opportunities currently available are in the following technical areas: Energy Efficient Electronic Sciences, Nanotechnology and Nanoscience, and Bioengineering and Synthetic Biology.

Position Description:
MOCVD Equipment Intern:
We are looking for a talented and motivated student to join our summer internship. The ideal candidate will be passionate about fabrication, and engineering and will be eager to learn.
Duties and responsibilities:

1. 
   Internship includes the modification, preventative maintenance, and repair of semiconductor processing equipment.
2. Use our MES (Manufacturing Execution System -Wiptrac) to check and document the status of production equipment.
3. Follow and update workflow within wiptrac.
4. Verify and maintain wafer identification and numeric lot identification
5. Perform additional engineering support duties as needed, including shipping, receiving, storing, and distributing of engineering supplies and equipment
6. must be able to follow all safety protocols."

UCLA Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)
Targeting educationally and financially disadvantaged community college students while accepting a number of 4-year college students, UCLA/DREW SHPEP will give students the opportunity to meet and work with other students whose interests in health professions parallel their own. Students will also have the opportunity to work with expert faculty and staff who are eager to mentor students and share knowledge in their individual fields.

UCSB Quantum Foundry

The Quantum Foundry internship program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and hosted at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB)  is currently recruiting undergraduates.  The program seeks to engage science and engineering undergraduate students from California Community Colleges, California State Universities, and other primarily undergraduate institutions for an 8-week summer research experience.

Undergraduate interns will gain first-hand experience in quantum-related scientific investigation via a dynamic, collaborative research environment. They are matched individually with Foundry faculty and graduate student lab mentors who provide ongoing training and support. Interns also participate in professional development activities preparing them for graduate research and the workforce.

UCSB-Smithsonian Scholars Program
The program provides activities and multi-day workshops that engages students in hands-on, skill-building activities connecting them with ongoing research projects. The overall goal of the program is to give students early research experiences that will help them prepare and be competitive for internships in STEM and to encourage students to participate in post-graduate opportunities.

University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders
The University of Michigan Future Public Health Leaders Program (U-M FPHLP) is a 10-week residential summer program funded by the CDC. U-M FPHLP provides students with opportunities for growth, learning and awareness in the field of public health. 

USRP NASA Mentorship Program- NASA
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) invites students who have been accepted for enrollment and currently enrolled students to apply for the USDA Internship Program. Student Trainees will gain valuable professional development experiences by taking advantage of career training, an individual mentor, shadowing experiences, professional webinars, and much more. Student Trainees work with esteemed scientists and senior professionals and receive on-the-job training that will create a career pathway for success. Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies- USC
This NSF-funded REU program will support eight highly motivated and talented undergraduate students to conduct independent but guided research that focuses on Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability during an intensive 8-week program at the Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island, CA. The program will provide students with hands-on research experience, training in laboratory and field methodologies (including a 1-day research cruise), introductory lectures and special seminars in oceanography and marine science, academic and career advisement, group activities and field trips to explore different parts of the island and ecosystems.

NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where they work closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.
