Registered Nursing
The registered nursing (RN) program, fully accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing, is a two-semester program offered every year starting in the spring semester. The program includes both classroom study and supervised clinical practice. Clinical practice takes place in our labs, local hospitals, and medical care facilities.
Application Information
The RN Nursing Application Period is available from June 1 - July 31 (dates are subject to change)
California licensed vocational nurses (LVN) and graduates from accredited vocational nursing programs are eligible to apply upon completion of Allan Hancock College program prerequisites. The LVN-to-RN program is specifically designed to provide our current AHC LVN's with an opportunity for career advancement and prepares the LVN for the additional responsibilities required of the registered nurse. If accepted into the program, you must comply with background checks and drug screening required by clinical agencies.
In addition, the program has a 30-unit certificate option, completion of which qualifies the successful graduate to take the RN licensing examination. If you choose to pursue the 30-unit certificate option you would NOT be a graduate of the Allan Hancock Nursing Program or of the college. Applicants to this curriculum alternative must meet with the Associate Degree of Nursing program director for advisement.
The applications are by mail and must be postmarked by last day of application period to be eligible. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Status letters are mailed out on the date specified in the application. (Note: Information regarding the status of an application will not be provided over the phone or email).
Prerequisite Information
RN program applicants must have fulfilled the following eligibility requirements before the application deadline:
- Students must be a high school graduate or equivalent
- Possess a current, valid, and unencumbered California Vocational Nursing License
- Must have completed the following courses or equivalent with a grade of C or better:
- English 101
- Math 331 (Algebra II) - equivalent or higher
- Psychology 101
- Biology 124 - Anatomy
- Biology 125 - Physiology
- Biology 128 - Microbiology
In addition, RN Program applicants must meet the meet Merit-Based Admission Criteria (Click below for more information).
The following application instructions apply:

All admission criteria must be met as outlined in the RN application.

A current California LVN license is necessary to meet application requirements.

Official Transcripts must show proof of LVN curriculum accomplished by military education and experience

DD214 or Military Card is required. Your discharge status must be in a condition other than dishonorable.

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Once application eligibility has been established the veteran will be giving priority admission .

Two admission slots will be held for any applicant who proves military education and experience and holds a valid and active California LVN license.

If the slots are not filled by priority military applicants the wait list applicants will be admitted.
All applicants must complete course requirements and meet the merit-based admission criteria to be eligible for enrollment in the Registered Nursing program.
The merit-based admission criteria are:
- Overall grade point average (GPA)
- Number of science repeats (Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology)
- Merit-based admissions test
AHCRN* = 1.181 (overall GPA) + 0.160 (Merit-based Admission test) – 0.568 (Number of science repeats)
An applicant with more than four (4) repeats in the sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology) is not eligible to apply to the RN program.
The merit-based admission test is based on the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). The applicant has two (2) attempts to meet the calculated cut-score for the merit-based admission test. If the applicant does not meet the calculated cut-score, they will meet with the RN program director (or designee) to develop a remediation plan. An applicant who does not meet the calculated cut-score after two attempts is not eligible to re-apply to the RN program.
Allan Hancock College RN program is approved by the Board of Registered Nursing and can be found listed on their webpage.
All RN programs in California are required to offer the 30-Unit Option and the programs are limited by law to two prerequisite courses. Students are not required to meet the admission eligibility requirements at AHC that ADN RN students are required to complete. All 30-Unit Option applicants are required to follow ALL application requirements for the Nursing program accept for the law required prerequisites. The waitlist for our RN program is currently 4 to 6 years.
The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
