Procedure for Active Shooter on Campus

Find your emergency Procedures Flip Chart and follow the instructions for "Active Threat on Campus."

AHCPD encourages you to BE ALERT of suspicious situations and report them to the AHC Police Department, ext. 3-911  (Santa Maria Campus), or ext. 5-911 (Lompoc Valley Center). From your cell phone dial 911.

If you witness or hear gunfire on campus, screaming or shouting, individuals running in panic on campus, take the actions outlined below immediately:

  1. HIDE: hide under your desk or behind furniture and out of sight. Silence you cell phone ring
  2. SECURE IN PLACE: lock your door or barricade in place. Make sure no one is visible from the outside through any windows, stay low to the floor, away from doors, silence cell phone ring, and turn off all lights.
  3. ESCAPE: if it is clear, evacuate to a safe place.
  4. FIGHT: if all else fails, fight to subdue or escape. Take action as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MAKE CONTACT WITH SUSPICIOUS OR POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SUBJECTS!

If you see a subject with a firearm, see a subject firing a weapon, or hear gunfire on campus, lock your door and call the police. From your campus office or classroom phone, dial 3-911.

If you are on a cell phone, dial 911. NOTE: Dialing 911 from a cell phone reaches the regional CHP dispatch center (San Luis Obispo) and they will transfer you to the local police, which creates a delay in emergency response. AHC Campus Police will be notified as soon as possible.

When connected with campus police supply the AHC Police Department with the following information:

  1. Nature of incident
  2. Specific location of incident, e.g., west side of building “A”
  3. Description of person(s) involved
  4. Direction of travel, etc.
  5. Location of victims and extent of their injuries

Provide police personnel with all pertinent. Ask other witnesses to do the same.  

  • AHC Police Department and local police will conduct the required campus search and take appropriate police action
  • The gravity of the situation will dictate the necessity to activate the Incident Command Center
  • Stay in place and evacuate per police instructions
  • The police will give the ALL CLEAR when it is safe
  • Keep your hands up when around police and do not take any items with you
  • Once in a safe location account for all your students and AHC staff

Be aware a campus lock down could be initiated. If possible have your cell phone with you and place it on silent. AHC will be communicating via our campus RAVE emergency notifications.
