Medical and First Aid

Provide first-aid care in case of minor injury or illness. Do not move or carry victim. Use first-aid equipment, protective gloves, and CPR masks available in department first-aid kits. (View specific first aid instructions.) Call AHC Police Department, ext. 3911 (Santa Maria Campus), ext. 5911 (Lompoc Valley Center), for assistance.

In case serious injury or illness occurs on campus, immediately call AHC Police Department at ext. 3911 (Santa Maria Campus), ext. 5911 (Lompoc Valley Center), or dial 911.

From your cell phone call Santa Maria Police Dispatch 925-2631, or Lompoc Police Dispatch 736-4511 Give your name; describe the nature of the medical problem and the campus specific location of the victim, e.g., west side of building “A”.

Quickly perform these five steps:

  1. Notify emergency personnel.
  2. Ask victim, “Are you okay?” and What is wrong?”
  3. Check breathing and give artificial respiration if necessary.
  4. Control serious bleeding by direct pressure on the wound.
  5. Keep victim still and comfortable. Have victim lie down if necessary.

Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are located in AHC Police Department vehicles.

Continue to assist victim until help arrives.

  1. Determine extent of injury or probable cause of illness.
  2. Protect from all disturbance, reassure victim and do not move unless absolutely necessary.
  3. Look for emergency ID, question witnesses and give all information to the nurse or AHC Police Department personnel.

Assisting a hearing impaired person in an emergency:

  • Flash the lights on and off, wave or tap the shoulder of the deaf or hard of hearing person to alert them to an emergency.
  • Face a deaf person directly and speak slowly and naturally, even if an interpreter is present. They may be trying to read your lips.
  • Have a pad and pencil available so that both of you understand the same message. This is especially necessary if you cannot understand their speech. Write slowly and let the deaf person read as you write.

Assisting a blind person in an emergency:

  • Assign a “buddy” to assist in evacuation according to the regular procedures.
  • Assisting a person with limited mobility in an emergency:
  • Persons using a wheelchair and others who cannot manage stairs should go to the area in front of the nearest elevator and WAIT for fire and safety personnel who expect to find them THERE.
